All Participants of the 'Ford Focus TDCi Drive Challenge 2011' Exceed 1,000km Target
Long-distance Challenge determined optimum fuel efficiency of Focus TDCi on a full tank of Shell Diesel with Fuel Economy Formula
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, 19 May 2011 – Ford today announced results of their recent 'Ford Focus TDCi Challenge' held from 28-30 April, which included eight respected automotive journalists and five Ford Focus TDCi owners competing in a series of fuel efficiency and performance related tests over a long-distance journey across Malaysia.
The results saw all of the 13 challengers surpass the 1,000km target (5.2L/100Km) on a full tank of Shell Diesel fuel, significantly outdistancing Ford's own superior fuel efficiency claim for the Focus TDCi with PowerShift of 5.8L/100Km, or a distance of 900km, on a full tank.
To ensure that all Focus TDCi vehicles met specific standards and that no fuel tampering took place, each vehicle was fitted with fuel measuring tools while gas tanks were officially sealed and witnessed by the officials and participants.
"The resounding success of this TDCi Challenge really underscores the exceptional fuel-efficiency of the Focus TDCi with PowerShift transmission and its unmatched performance. Together with our partner Shell, we proved without a doubt that the Focus TDCi – using high quality Shell diesel fuel, truly delivers superior fuel economy," explained David Westerman, Regional Manager – Asia Pacific, Ford Export Operations.
En.Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd, and En. Mohd Hazem Abd Rahman, Managing Director of Sime Darby Auto Connexion, officially flagged off the Challenge in Petaling Jaya. The course was based on a predetermined route and distance timetable including stopovers at popular locations such as Ipoh and Penang, across the Malaysian Peninsular.
"The impressive results of the Challenge are a clear validation of the market-leading standards we have set with our Shell Diesel with Fuel Economy," said Shell's En. Azman Ismail.

Challenge winner and Focus TDCi owner, Kevin Tan, said: "It was an interesting challenge for me as I made comparisons with the Japanese cars in the market – but most of those cars are out of my price range. The Focus TDCi is a fuel efficient, superb all-round performing vehicle that provides a controlled and pleasurable driving experience at greater value for money. It drives the way you would expect it to."
